Would you sell your home to follow what you believe in?

Nicole and Mark Bijlsma did!

Nicole is a building biologist, author of Healthy Home, Healthy Family and founder of the Australian College of Environmental Studies.

She wasn’t happy with the ingredients in natural cleaning products and set out to formulate her own range. A journey that would take five years!

What came to fruition was the Abode range of natural cleaning products.

Joanne at Shop Naturally recently added the range to her online store and has ranked it as her number one cleaning products. Jo sent me some of the range to test for myself.

I don’t really buy a lot of cleaning products anymore, preferring to make my own, especially with things like cleaning sprays. However, I think I could easily become a convert. I actually had my whole family trying these out as I like to delegate the cleaning (hot tip there!) Here are some of our thoughts about the products:

  • Everyone is happy with the dish-washing detergent and thought it worked well and had a lovely, light scent.
  • The laundry liquid and the laundry detergent worked also worked really well (even on kid’s clothes!)
  • The surface spray got rid of grease build up in the kitchen very quickly. I only needed a light spray and a once over wipe.
  • The bathroom cleaner surprised us with how well it cleaned our grotty shower. Usually we have to really use a lot of elbow grease with our regular bicarb/vinegar combo. My teenage son thought it was fabulous that he could do it a lot quicker than usual.
  • The toilet gel was really quick and easy to use too. Again, a lot less elbow grease required in comparison to bicarb/vinegar.
  • I also love that there is no residue to rinse, unlike bicarb which takes a bit to rinse down.
  • I found the smell of the sprays a little strong when used in a small space, but my family didn’t. I do have a very strong sense of smell, so that could be it!
  • The products are super-concentrated, so you only need to use a small amount. I need to explain that better to the kids who like to use things liberally!

Overall, I am really impressed with how well these products perform. I think Nicole and Mark have nailed it.

I also like to make sure the ingredients in these products are as natural as they claim to be and truly safe for my family. Nicole and Mark have made the range with the highest quality ingredients available – food grade where possible. They have been specifically made  for people with skin and chemical sensitivities.

Other things that tick my ‘natural new age mum boxes’ are that the products are made in Australia and the company is Australian owned. I like that. You are also able to buy the products in bulk 5 litre or kilogram quantities to reduce packaging.

If I could improve on the products, I would like to see Nicole offer the products as refills so I could top up my spray bottles and containers.

The Abode range is perfect for people just starting out on reducing the chemicals in their home. The products are a direct swap for their regular products and work the same way. It is a very easy and painless change to make !

I think it is fantastic to see an Aussie family leading the way in natural cleaning with a commitment to the health of their customers and the environment. The Bjlisma’s passion, knowledge and integrity are very inspirational and I can’t wait to see what they do next!

How to buy:

Jo is doing an introductory offer at the moment, with the smaller sizes in the range at 20% off, so you can try them out! Check out the website for more information.

I would really love some new mixing bowls for when I bake in the kitchen

  2. 7-8-2013

I would love to buy some coconut oil as I’ve been dying to try it but it’s a bit out of my budget at the moment!

Eco All Natural Sunscreen – Body SPF 30+ (100g)
Being a family of very fair skinned redheads, sunscreen is a must in our household. Even in winter time we lather it on. As a result, knowing it is made of natural products, reducing any exposure to chemicals is a huge plus.

(I Like Shop Naturally on Facebook)

  4. 7-8-2013

Camelbak eddy kids water bottle in the heart design would be perfect for my daughter!

  5. 7-8-2013

I would definitely buy the Abode Natural Laundry Liquid. My son has sensitive skin and it is so hard to find anything that does not irritate him. Thank you.

  6. 7-8-2013

I would spend it on some lock & lock bpa free plastic containers, after reading you eliminating plastic wrap and containers on your blog you have inspired me to do the same.

  7. 7-8-2013

Shop naturally is one of my favourite shops :) I bought some of the Abode range from Joanne too – and I LOVE it!! The kitchen spray is *fantastic* on the stove after my messy boys and hubby cook – hardly any scrubbing at all – its even good on the dreaded cement weetbix! I love the loo cleaner, and the washing liquid too – and the bathroom cleaner!! I haven’t tried the dishwashing liquid yet as I’m still using up our old one!

Anyhoo – I have a wish list as long as my arm hehe!! So if I was lucky enough to win I would put it towards the onix icy pole moulds – I really really want one to make icy poles for my kids, but just can’t seem to squeeze it into the budget :)

  8. 7-8-2013

Thanks for showcasing great products for us. I like the sound of the bathroom cleaner. I’ll have to train my boys up in cleaning the shower too.
I checked out Shop Naturally and if I won I would put it towards a glass straws set. Like the above reader, I would like to continue to decrease the amount of plastic we use. The boys use far too many plastic straws for my liking.

  9. 7-8-2013

The cleaning products have been on my wishlist for a while – as soon as I run down on my supplies (I do like to buy in bulk!) I will be buying a variety of them

  10. 7-8-2013

As a huge lover of beauty products I would love to explore products that are not harmful to my body, as currently I know all the products in my bathroom contain chemicals. We are switching our family (due to my sons health issues) to whole, organic foods and would love to continue our new way of living throughout the whole house!

  11. 7-8-2013

I cuurently use Abode & love it :)

I still haven’t made my own sunscreen yet, so that would be my first choice. Have to say – the prices look very reasonable!
