What is the Hippychick Hip Seat?
Basically, it’s a light weight fabric and foam seat that you wear around your waist to carry your kids (up to 20kgs). What’s so great about this seat is that it spreads the child’s weight so you don’t end up with bad backs, necks and hips!
Unfortunately, I ended up with a bulging disc from picking up and carrying two kids in the wrong way. So, this product makes me very excited. Please mums, look after your backs!
It’s also been making waves in the chiropractic community since it was endorsed by the Chiropractic Association of Australia and won some design awards.
This graphic shows you exactly how it helps keep your spine nice and straight.
Who are Tin Lid Ideas?

So how did it go?
Alisha has two kids, ages nearly 3 and 19 months, so I asked her to road test them for me and see what she thought. This is what she says…..
I really liked the hip seat especially from a structural point of view as being able to wear your child on your hip without putting your back out is so important. There is so much lifting and carrying when you become a parent. My back was always sore after the birth of both of my kids as my pregnancies put a lot of strain on my lower back and I had to be really conscious of lifting correctly. Then when I carried them on my hip when they were old enough, the same lower back tenderness would flare up!
When I tried the hip seat, I noticed that the weight of my child was on my hips and so the pressure on my back wasn’t a concern like it was when they were carried on my hip without this seat.
I found the belt a bit tight on my frame but I have big hips and they took care of that by having an extender part available to make the width of the waist belt wider for me.
It would be good during the clingy stages that your bubs go through when you need to be carrying them around a lot.
I took photos of both my kids while my hubby wore the hippy seat to demonstrate that from the time they are old enough to sit on your hip right up to toddler ages, they fit well and comfortably. You actually can’t notice the difference between the weights of my kids while using this! My youngest just held on like a cuddly koala and my eldest LOVED it! She isn’t lifted up as much these days and just adored being close to us while we walked around the house. It is no effort at all to have the weight of her on your hip like this whereas, without it, we would choose not to carry my daughter like this at all, due to the weight it places on our backs.
My husband noticed that he didn’t have to hold on as tightly so it was much easier on his arms also. We did notice that it slipped down a bit but we pulled it really tight and then there was no issue so make sure you have it pulled tight so it is nice and snug.
The only downside I could see with the seat is that you only have one arm free, so the occasions you might use it could be limited if you need both hands. It would be perfect if you weren’t able to use a stroller.
I was very glad to try out the hip seat as I had seen them for sale at our chiropractor’s and anything my chiro endorses for the back, I know is a great product.
People I would recommend the hippy seat for:
New mums and dads as getting bubs on the hip when they are old enough, this will save the back early on!
Anyone with back issues who has young children
Anyone who has a bub going through the ‘clingy’ stage
