Is your kettle harming your health?

February 12, 2013 · 41 Comments

Is your kettle harming your health?Well the Universe was truly giving me a nudge a few weeks ago, when not one, but two of my favourite Facebook pages (www.livelightlynow.com and Alexx Stuart) both mentioned the dangers of having plastic kettles.

Like Tracy at Live Lightly Now, this had totally escaped me! I have no idea how. I lecture the hubby and kids constantly about never putting hot things in plastic and here I was boiling it up every day for my morning cuppa. Eghads!

“Plastic water bottles release the toxic chemical bisphenol A at a rate 55 times greater when filled with boiling water than when filled with room temperature water, according to a study conducted by researchers from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and published in the journalย Toxicology Letters.” Natural News

Now, I don’t know if my plastic kettle had any BPA in it, but really, I am not comfortable with any plastic being heated.

Alexx had already done her research and found the glassย Breville Kettle (pictured) to be a good one. I had a quick scurry around the shops (more like a mad panic, trying not to think of all the toxins I had ingested over gosh knows how many years!) and this one looked good to me too. Many of the stainless and glass kettles still had plastic inserts as the gauge. This one only has plastic on the lid, which you can easily flick up to pour out your water. A totally stainless steel kettle would also do the job.

Crisis averted!

So, what are you adding to your daily cuppa? Is this something that worries you?

I had the exact same epiphany a couple of weeks ago! We bought a glass stove top kettle from Amazon and it’s been brilliant. An added bonus is that we are using less electricity as we have a gas stove and there’s more space on the bench top.

I have this exact same kettle! Yes, it isn’t as super stylin as others but the fact that it was glass sold me. I’ve always used glass bottles for my kids and we are now a microwave free household as well. It’s something small ๐Ÿ™‚

I ditched my electric kettle few months ago after the electricity went up so high. Now I use the on stove kettle one and I believe its stainless steel from Kmart. We are in a process of changing into healthy life and thanks I found you!

I use an old ceramic electric kettle from the 1960s, so don’t have to worry about any of the issues with plastic. Plus at 1700 watts, it is 500 watts less than our modern electric kettle! It also boils the water faster.

I have just thrown out Contempo Kettle – supposedly stainless steel.
The metal base inside had apparently disintegrated and I found metal particles all through the interior base – which would therefore have been in recent cups and also when the boiled water was used to rinse pasta for dinner tonight. We have all been consuming metal particles!! Concerned for health impact! The glass option sound good.
