Kale Chips….what’s the go?
Kale chips seem to be the latest trend.
This is my second go at making them and I had mixed reactions!
The Natural New Age Kids ran to the sink and spat them out.
The Natural New Age Dad scoffed a whole bowl and pronounced them absurdly fantabulous (okay I made that last bit up, but he did like them!).
Anyway, make them and see what you think.
Okay, so this is what you do:
Get a bunch of organic kale. Wash it well. Trim off the stalks and cut into bite size pieces.
Add a couple of tablespoons of organic coconut oil, a couple of tablespoons of nutritional yeast flakes (or savoury yeast flakes) and 1 tablespoon of Herbamare.
Massage the mix into your kale lovingly.
Chuck them into your dehydrator and dehydrate. I made mine just as we were going to bed, so I put it on the lowest setting overnight.
If you don’t have a dehydrator, you can bake them in the oven on the lowest setting, for a couple of hours….. but keep an eye on them!! If they burn, they will be very bitter and yucky.
What is kale?
Kale is a leafy green vegetable, a bit like silverbeet, but not as soft. It’s from the Brassica family of vegetables and there are several different varieties.
Kale is reasonably new to Australian mainstream supermarkets and you may even have trouble sourcing it. Poke around in the farmer’s markets or even have a crack at growing it yourself.
Mind Body Green has 10 health benefits of kale that you can read here.
Pretty much, it’s good stuff, so get into it! It works well in smoothies too.
What about you? Do you like kale chips? How do you make yours?
goodness i love kale. we eat it at least twice a week. boiled, steamed or oven-baked. i love to bake in the oven, coated in a little coconut oil and sprinkled with crushed cashew nuts mixed with cayenne pepper and salt. so full of calcium and nutrition. my favourite vegie. unlike spinach or silverbeet it doesn’t go all soft and floppy when cooked so it is a perfect chewy and substantial ingredient to your dinner plate.
yum.. your chips sound really good… thanks Jen!
Hahah. My kids spat them out in the sink too! I was so disappointed and I haven’t been game to try and get them to eat kale again! But these are some great alternative ideas. Thanks for sharing.
I think it’s a matter of trying different oils and seasonings to see which one they like!
I made then simply with salt and oil and baked in the oven. I thought they were nice but not as good as everyone banged on about (I even read a review that said they tasted exactly like potato chips, um no!). Hubby’s review? ‘They taste like salty leaves’. Don’t think I’ll be making them again but we love kale in lots of other recipes! 😉
Yum! We all LOVE them! (which is me, hubby, Miss 10, Miss 8 and 2year old twins!!!!!!!!) As I am allergic to corn, “Kale Chips” have replaced my popcorn when watching movies at home x
I love that…!! Thanks for your ideas too xx
Love this Sonia – especially that lovely photo with the sun shining through the kale leaves 🙂 Also if you keep the kale stems they are fabulous for juicing!
ohhhh good idea… but I don’t have a juicer, only my thermy – I could chuck them in a smoothie I guess! Thanks for your ideas too x
My kids absolutely love kale chips! I found that using melted ghee was the best flavour from all the oils we have tried and they prefer just salted chips. Hubby on the other hand loves his spicy with some mexican chilli powder with added cayenne and we get a flavour similar to the kettle chilli chips brand. Yummo. I have taken the kale chips to soccer games and other outings and all the kids love them and parents are often amazed… I really think the key is using the ghee. Also we do ours in the oven rather than the dehydrator as they become much crisper. Kale is hard to come by sometimes and we prefer the curly variety for chips as it is the least bitter….we are now growing our own and can’t wait to have a continous supply. So have another go people with the curly variety using ghee and in the oven and you will find they are pretty close to potato chips!
wow thanks Amanda…. that sounds delicious!! I love that you take them to soccer and share them around!!
I love mine too. I cut the stems and break into bit size bits also however I find it best to only use 1tb of coconut oil rubbed in gently and a tiny sprinkle of sea salt to be perfect. Then simply bake for ten min on 170 on baking paper and presto. Delish.
Okay, maybe I need to cut back the coconut oil for the kids!
