Welcome to “Natural New Age Mums Chat About…”
I am so excited to be featuring some amazing Aussie mums who specialize in their own particular natural and/or new age area. The aim is to give us a little bit of inside information into some new things we may not know about, but are curious!
Today we welcome the gorgeous Linzi Smith aka The Lice Fairy.
My name is Linzi Smith AKA The Lice Fairy! I am the founder of “The Lice Fairy” which is my natural head lice treatment, education and prevention business. I am a wife of 21 years, the mum of 2 school-aged children, a hairdresser, and an eco warrior at heart. I love to eat healthy food and try my best to be as natural as possible in everything I eat, drink (I’m sure champagne is natural isn’t it! lol) and use on my body and in my home.
What is your outlook on life?
I moved from the UK to Sydney almost 15 years ago and moved to The Sunshine Coast in QLD nearly 3 years ago. I love the life we have created in Australia, I feel blessed to be here and thank God for each day I have with my beautiful family and friends. Life is to be treasured as if it were a priceless gift.
How long have you been a Lice Fairy?
I have been a hairdresser for over 25 years (yikes!) I started specializing in the treatment and prevention/education of head lice in 2005. So, how did you end up being The Lice Fairy – Head Lice Specialist?
I started thinking about head lice treatments, removal and prevention as my business in 2005.
As a hairdresser I realized there was a huge lack of accurate information available to parents, teachers and carers about head lice and how to treat and prevent them. Even hairdressers often have very little idea what to do, because when we do encounter them, we want rid of them (and sadly the client) ASAP so we shoo them out of the salon to go and get a treatment from “the chemist down the road and come back for your haircut when you have used the treatment.”
As a friend it became apparent that a lot of people had either never seen head lice or if they had been unlucky enough to have experienced them, they had very sketchy ideas on what to do. Many of my friends relied on “old wives tales” and a prayer to deal with head lice and nits.
As a mum I knew there had to be a better, kinder, more dignified way to look after our little people instead of taking them from pillar to post only to get inaccurate information and bottles of chemicals to douse their hair with. This was not the way I wanted it to be! I knew I could help other parents and point them in the right direction.
How does a session work?
I am available for consultation and advice by appointment over the telephone, in person or via e-mail. Natural, organic lice prevention and treatment products can be purchased on my website.
I also provide a treatment service where visit clients in their home when ever possible. I normally find this is better for the children. Having head lice can be a difficult and often scary experience for little ones.
I can also visit schools, day care centres etc. to run workshops and teach parents and care givers what to look for and how to treat suspected case of head lice.
How much does a session normally cost?
It varies from the Initial Free Consultation worth $15-$30 to $300 + depending on the level of infestation, the number of family members affected and the length and type of hair and the sort of service required. Some families are more “hands on” and want to help and learn at the same time where others just want me to do absolutely everything and I am fine with either, what ever suits them.
Is The Lice Fairy service suitable for everyone?
Everyone can be treated from small toddlers to grandparents. Anyone (human) who has hair can get head lice. The eco.kid range of products are suitable for ages 18mths and up and all hair types.
Where can we find out more about natural head lice prevention?
Visit my website: www.thelicefairy.com.au for everything you need to know about lice – there are lots of free resources for everyone!
Why would you recommend The Lice Fairy and eco.kid?
I would recommend The Lice Fairy service because it helps give parents their confidence in knowing what to look for, how to treat and prevent further infestations. The products I use and recommend are organic and eco friendly. You have to shampoo your children’s hair, so to me it makes sense to use something that doesn’t have harmful chemicals and prevents head lice at the same time!
Do you have a favourite inspirational quote?
“Lice aren’t scary when you know The Lice Fairy” and “Don’t let your fears stand in the way of your dreams”

My daughter starting grade 2 has long, fine & curly hair. The school does not have an exclusion policy (even though private) and my son is about to start prep.. I am dreading an outbreak when school starts! Am very interested in natural products.
Thanks for sharing this post, Sonia. I did battle with headlice for several years when my daughters were young and I felt as though I was on a never-ending treadmill.
Now my daughter has the same problem with her 2 girls so I would love to be able to give her a Lice Bomb pack.
My youngest came home with head lice, I spent ages treating and clearing her only to have her come home with them again. Its so frustrating when some don’t even bother checking.
in my experience head lice are so hard to get rid of, they just keep coming back. my daughter is 8 and school is like a lice breeding ground :/ i have very long hair myself and am petrified of catching headlice because i have no idea how on earth i would manage to get a tiny lice comb through my extra long mane!
There is nothing more frustrating than lice my family has battled them when my eldest two were at primary school and now we are back on the battle fields with my two youngest being at preschool. There were lice at our preschool whole last year and we are bracing ourselves for another busy season this year. Thankfully one of my 4 kids is a boy who has short hair.
Ugh! My 10 y.o. has had lice on and off over the years and I’ve succeeded in eradicating them, but this year has been horrid. I’d get rid of them, and then another infection, I suspect someone in her class just didn’t get treated. It’s been a long battle. I looked for products in the chemist just yesterday but was bewildered by the range. The Tea Tree product we found effective has disappeared! Ugh! I’d like to try the Eco Kid products, as I hate using chemicals. Thank you Lice Fairy for being sensitive to what the children are going through. Some hairdressers treat you and your child like you have a horrid disease. I’ve even offered to pay them to come to my house, buy my own scissors if they would cut her hair, but they refuse! So thank you and thanks for the post.
Headlice are my worst nightmare! My daughter has fine, fair, extremely long hair. She has had headlice only twice but both times it has been massivel time consuming to comb the nits out of her hair. Anything that helps to treat & prevent the issue without nasty chemicals is a godsend!
Working in a primary school, I see a lot of children with head lice. We are not allowed to single out children and say that your child has headlice. It’s very frustrating for staff and parents, especially, when you get some parents who don’t care and it’s their children who repeatedly reinfest the heads of the other children who do get treated.
We found a wonderful simple treatment is just to massage coconut oil into the hair, leave overnight (put a towel over your pillow) then comb out with a lice comb the next morning. Any lice will have suffocated and the eggs slide right off the hair shaft. Shampoo as normal. Works a treat.
We’ve had headlice on and off ever since my boys started preschool, after many frustrating days combing I’ve found that spraying their hair with a mixture of essential oils every morning and combing every friday afternoon, just in case, more if I find any nits, controls them very well, we haven’t had them bad enough for them to make it to my hair for a few years now, yay!
My daughter had head lice really bad in preschool and off to the chemist I went to get whatever they had. We had a couple of reinfestations before finally being rid of them. Would love to get a more natural solution to have on hand if they return as she starts school this year.
4 kids having nit treatment done….one crying Mumma on the bathroom floor….exhausts me when others at school dont do it and I do….(weekly now to be safe)
Head lice seem to be an ongoing problem in our house lately. Our daughter has this lovely bunch of friends who spend a lot of time hugging each other which is all well and good until one has head lice and before you know it everyone has them. Anyway I persist with coming conditioner through her hair and we eventually get rid of them all as I refuse to apply a pesticide to my child’s head.
I will never forget the first time I saw head lice on my daughter. I thought it was a little bug caught in her hair and flicked it out, but then I saw another, and another, and figured it was lice. I find the best way to avoid them is to braid her hair EVERY day. If there is a note sent home about lice in her class then I come through with conditioner.
I had a whole year where my daughter got head lice, her best friend had them all the time, her dad didnt do anything about them. I would finally get rid of ghem, only for her to have them back asap. It was a hard year!
I remember when I was about 10 and my brother was 7 Mum took us to get a hair cut. The hairdresser was about to start cutting my hair only to discover those dreaded things! I was so embarrassed. My brother had them too. That head lice shampoo made my hair so knotty, I dreaded the combing after the wash. My brother had his head shaved, seems easier for boys haha.
With boys, I thought I had managed to avoid head lice for several school years. At the end of the school holidays a few years ago, the boys went to their grandparents for a few days and the youngest came back with an itchy head. I thought it was just from the salt water but on closer examination realised he had a horrible infestation. I felt terrible that he started the school year that way. I also was horrified with some of the products that I was offered to treat them with.
It sounds like a great product and terrific service. There is a lot of misinformation out there and I assume there is also a lot of people who don’t have or take the time to treat them, judging from all the school notes that come home.
We’ve not yet had one. But our eldest starts prep next week so I’m braced for them
I have four school age children and have had to deal with lice on a number of occasions. I refuse to use chemicals on their heads so I’ve had to be very vigilant combing through their hair with a lice comb and conditioner (with a few lavender drops mixed in)… this method works most of the time but takes many weeks to be rid of them all and if I miss even one…… THEN IT ALL STARTS OVER AGAIN!!!!! Enough! I’d love to try eco.kid, it sounds like a wonderfully effective natural solution, made by a woman who knows her stuff!
We are yet to have head lice here (touch wood) but I really should be ready for them 🙂
My first born starts big school next week so we are all bracing for what is to come home with her from school, gossip, tears, bad words and most probably lice. having a lice bomb pack ready to treat would help mummy sleep better at night!
I NEED relief! My daughter has had a plague of nits for over a year, she is treated weekly & nothing seems to help or prevent the situation. I have even contemplated shaving her head as I am totally over the weekly struggling doing her hair. Her best friend has them (untreated as I can only guess the parents aren’t aware, don’t ask me why as I can see them all over her head from a distance) & every time she sees her, we get them.. She doesn’t even go to school yet (she starts this year & will be in the class with her best friend 🙁 )!! I honestly don’t know what to do anymore & just want the nits to stop!! I would be over the moon if I won this pack
currently dealing with it my daughter has gotten it for couple years and been through it twice in the last month prob is during rehearsals at the moment she hugs all the little kids ahh this time she even past in on ahh.. i have hard times because her hair is so fine that even the fine tooth comb wont help grab ahold of anything driving me nuts i sit there for well over a couple hours after treating with tweezers trying to grab everything out ahhh is all i really have to say on the subject at the moment
Our first experience with head lice come at Christmas time when we were away on holidays. Doing my 5 year old daughter’s hair to go out for dinner, something moved, a quick Google search confirmed my fears, head lice. In a panic hubby flew up to the chemist who was shutting in 5 minutes and grabbed a treatment. It was the most terrible strong smelling chemical and I just hated putting it on my daughter’s head, but in desperation I did it anyway. I never want to use that stuff again, I want to be prepared with a natural pack sitting in the cupboard for the next raid!!!
My 4yr old has had lice twice. He has autism and lots of sensory issues. His head is so sensitive that i cannot wash, brush or even touch his hair! He also has a heightened sense of smell, and the product we used was even too strong for me. Lets just say, getting the lice out was a complete day from hell!!!
Well, my latest lice experience happened just this morning! I checked my boys hair when they finished school last year – but it seems that we must have picked them up on one of our busy holiday outings *arrgh* so I had to de-nit 5 boys this morning! Luckily I usually keep a nit solution in the cupboard just in case (the infestations seem to come in waves at school and you never know when they will hit!) but I have also had great success with just coating the hair in conditioner, combing with a nit comb and then removing any leftover eggs with fingernails – that’s worked well for us – but my boys all have short hair 🙂 Actually – they were quite excited to see the ‘bugs’ in their hair, and were competing to see who had the most lol!! boys!!
Aaaahhhh! Healice experiences… where do I begin!
It is my worst nightmare, as it takes over 3 hours each session to go completely through my daughter’s thick hair and remove all the eggs. Then to make it worse, it’s so frustrating when other parents don’t seem to do the same, infecting everyone again!!!
I, thankfully, have never experienced lice with my kids yet. I remember the horrors as a child who had very very thick hair. I look at my daughter, who not only has thick hair, but curly hair and dread when/if she gets them.
I have never had an experience with head lice (yet), and can’t remember getting them as a kid! I am dreading the day, as I am sure it will come!!
My daughter has come home today with her very first case of lice… eek! Oh well, at least I can get it sorted out hopefully before school starts… and fingers crossed that her brothers (and the rest of us!!) don’t get them too!! 🙂
My daughter has had head lice a few times, it was very frustrating when I spent hours getting the little critters out of her hair- only to have her get them again within weeks! 🙁

My sister-in-law’s children are unlucky enough to pick them up regularly & being of the mind that you lead by example I have been treated regularly when an infestation occurs, I am also trying to lead by example with my step-granddaughter but she seems to have a phobia with her hair being washed properly & brushed, I’m trying to help by giving her special shampoo to help as a preventative but need more help.
My son got Lice when he was only 12 months old! I was devastated, only because he seemed sooooo young! I am always on the look out for safe non toxic alternatives.
YAY !! Thank you for the lovely giveaway and congrats to the other winners :):):)
You are so welcome!!! 🙂 Did you get the email?
Yes I did thank you just emailed Lindsay my details 🙂
Just came across your thread! My neighbours kids got head lice from school recently so I suggested that they try out the Eco.Kid products, as our kids play together, and they worked like a charm. They now only use Eco.Kid shampoos and hair treatment products on them as they say Eco.kid prevents any future infestations. Actually now their whole family use the products, and our kids too! Thanks a million!
brilliant! no lice is nice 😀
