Welcome to another instalment of, “Natural New Age Mums Chat About…”
I am so excited to be featuring some amazing Aussie mums who specialize in their own particular natural and/or new age area! The aim is to give us a little bit of inside information into some new things we may not know about, but are curious!
Today I welcoming the gorgeous Tracey Rose to the blog to talk about hypnobirthing.
Tell us about yourself….
My name is Tracey Rose and I’m a 34 year old natural childbirth educator (specialising in hypnobirthing), writer, radio journalist and mother of two adorable children, Honey (5) and Maximus (3). We live on Sydney’s Northern Beaches and I run my website www.TraceyRose.com from home.
Prior to having children I was very career focused, working my way up the ladder of several capital city radio stations.
However, my two amazing birthing experiences revealed my true purpose in life – to encourage and inspire other pregnant women to get educated about birth, so they can have the most positive experience possible too.
In my free time I love walking, taking the kids swimming, riding their scooters and catching ferries around Sydney Harbour. I’m also getting back into yoga because my 5 year old daughter really loves it and keeps asking me to do it with her – cute!
Honey has Cystic Fibrosis and Coeliac Disease, so I am committed to learning how to manage her health in the most natural way possible … and as a result I am becoming quite the gluten free cook.
What is your outlook on life?
Life is meant to be FUN and ATTITUDE is everything!
How long have you been a natural child birth educator?
I worked in the radio industry for about 10 years before I had my babies and I still use my skills as a journalist to promote positive birthing now through social media and mainstream media, but I started studying natural birth when I was pregnant 5 years ago.
What study or training did you have to be a natural child birth educator?
The best study and training I did was my own birth experiences.
I researched a lot about the mind/body connection when I was pregnant, then enrolled into a group hypnobirthing course and used the techniques to stun the medical staff at the hospital 😉 They couldn’t believe I was so calm the whole labour.
I have done various teacher training (HypnoBirthing and GentleBirth) to be able to run my own classes and I am currently doing my doula training with Childbirth International.
Teaching mothers how to use their bodies and work instinctively with their babies is truly satisfying.
So, what is hypnobirthing ?
My specialty is to help pregnant women use their own natural pain-killing hormones during labour. These can be switched on and off by the mother’s physical, mental and emotional state by the use of hypnosis, relaxation, meditation and breathing.
Using hypnosis and other relaxation techniques for birth is not new, but the philosophy and techniques were most famously noted by English obstetrician Dr Grantly Dick-Reed in the 1920’s. He observed that in the absence of fear and tension, severe pain doesn’t have to be part of labour.
Most people don’t even realise this is possible, so it’s amazing to share this knowledge.
Gentle and natural birthing is not just about the experience for the mother, but it’s also about creating the most gentle and safe experience for the baby.As a result, mothers and babies are healthier, calmer and have higher APGAR scores after birth. It also makes for easier bonding and more intuitive mothering.
How does a session work?
PRIVATE: I hold private weekend workshops with parents either at their home or via Skype.
They receive a book plus CD’s and I teach them all the skills I used (plus more) to have a to have a positive birth.
This includes lots of tips for dads and birthing partners, plus I teach them how to navigate the hospital system for the safest, most gentle birth possible.
They also receive unlimited ongoing phone/email support and access to a private Facebook group.
VIRTUAL: I have also just launched live virtual classes. This is a result of many women not being in the same city/country as me who want to attend group sessions.
These are held in a webinar format, where couples attend online for 2 hours p/week for 4 weeks.
Parents in the virtual class receive the same course materials as private clients.
They also receive a free 30 minute phone/skype chat to answer questions or assist in technique practice etc. They also have access to a private Facebook group.
PHONE SESSION: Some mums just want some questions answered or want to make sure they are doing techniques/practice correctly. I also help them shift any limiting beliefs about birth enabling them to move forward.
How much does a session normally cost?
Private classes cost $497
Virtual classes cost $297
1 hour phone sessions with me $97
Is hypnobirthing suitable for everyone?
Short answer – No.
If a mother doesn’t want to do hypnosis/relaxation/visualisation and is being pressured by their partner/friend to do it, then it’s not for them.
You need to be an active and willing participant for these techniques to work.
However, what I’d like mums to know is, that all information and techniques I teach is based on evidence and science, so it’s not just for hippies 😉
Also, even women who need to have a c-section find this information very beneficial.
Why would you recommend hypnobirthing ?
Learning how to birth your baby gently and naturally will have such a positive impact on your whole life.
It’s not just about your baby’s birth day, it’s also about how you cope during the newborn stage. Mums and bubs generally recover more easily, physically and emotionally if they have had a positive birth experience.
Hypnobirthing helps women get over the fear of birth and approach it with excitement instead of dread.
I give them the skills to work with their body and baby for a more comfortable birth, meaning they are much less likely to want or need medical intervention.
These techniques enable mothers to keep calm during birth, which in turn helps to prevent the baby going into foetal distress.

Oh love this. I’ve had my babies now but so wish I’d been calmer in my last one. It came on quickly & was over before I knew it phew!!! One crazy hour of my life & a beautiful outcome (both times) BUT if I did do it again I’d like to do it this way 🙂
me too!
I have had 2 c-sections and am now 32 weeks pregnant hoping for a vba2c! Really keen to go anything that could possibly increase my chances of a natural birth.
This is the perfect timing for this post for me! Perfect. I also have a little girl with CF; she is turning 7 this year. It has been a long road but I am now 21 weeks pregnant with another little girl and I am feeling incredibly excited and very blessed. I have already been thinking of all things birth (with a fair bit of anxiety) and just recently started wondering more and more about hypnobirthing. I haven’t known where to start to be honest. I look forward to learning more!
Thanks for the great post 🙂

My little girl is 5 now and starting school next year Elle, so now I’m looking at all the things that go with having a child with CF at school – eek!
Good luck with your pregnancy and feel free to ask me any questions about hypnobirthing 🙂
Aaah, I wish I knew how to edit the last bit of my previous comment – that’ll teach me! I wrote more out and decided to condense, haha!
done 🙂
Thank you :)x
I would like to be the first in my family to have a natural, calm, beautiful drug free birth. I believe in the power of the mind and would love to try hyponbirthing to help me bring my first baby into the world in a peaceful and natural way.
The mind can help you do so much to help you have a calm and natural birth 🙂
Great interview Sonia! I practiced and used hypnobirthing for my first birth (hypno water birth) and am hoping for the same experience this next time (in 7 weeks or so!). I agree with Tracey that it is an amazing skill to learn and use for life, not just labour!
wow! that’s great to know Christie! Waiting patiently to see new bub!
Yes, it definitely helped me stay calm and sane during those newborn stages too 😉
Sending you lots of positive birth vibes for the next one Christie … xxx
Wow this sounds fantastic! I heard about hypnobirthing at the very late stages of my first pregnancy and I am now 18 weeks pregnant with my 2nd baby. I had a great birthing experience, howeve would love to take control of my birth experience. Thank you for this information, I’d love to read Tracey’s book.
I’m due in 4 weeks & am preparing for a natural, drug free birth (if possible). I would love any information that can assist with this.
I hypnobirthed both my babies in the last 3 years. I’m still so proud to this day of the hospital midwives asking in my room “now which of you mums have birth to the 10 pounder without any help at all?” 😉 I can imagine Tracey being a great teacher and facilitator of this amazing experience x
Haha … love it Alisha … hypnobirthing definitely rocks.
I had to be transferred by ambulance during my 2nd birth, but the paramedics thought i was on some sort of drugs because I was so chilled out with my eyes closed. They also couldn’t tell when I was having surges, so I had to tell them 😉
you are a legend!
I used Hypnobirthing for all three of my babies and I can’t recommend it enough! One thing I will say though is don’t feel as though you have to be calm and serene for the entire duration. Every woman is different and every birth is different. Learn this technique and use it if feels right and don’t judge yourself too harshly if you end up bellowing like a cow while you push your bubba out. I ended up using the hypnobirthing technique all the way through my 12 hour labours and then at the end…..bellowed like a cow while I pushed my babies out lol. Those 12 hours were amazing though. Hypnobirthing was the only pain relief I needed and it was magic!
Oh how gorgeous is both Tracey and what she does!
What could be more beautiful and powerful that helping women have treasured, happy births.
Both my girls came super fast and I have to admit with my first I had written that I wanted lots oif pain relief, pethadine etc etc! Eek yes I know, but I was young (and scared) but when I got to labour my baby came too quick and they wouldn’t let me have anything! So I had a natural birth and afterward was actually so glad I did – though I would have REALLY liked to know about work like this that Tracey does so I could have been CALM and enjoyed it XXX
Ohh .. thanks Bek .. xxx
Every time I read something written by Tracey or watch one of her vlogs, I’m instantly grabbed by her raw and genuine passion. You can tell she really wants to help women and that she knows what she is talking about!
I used HypnoBirthing for my first child had a beautiful, totally pain-free birth. The techniques taught are amazing and not only helped me immensely during labour, they also helped me feel calm and confident during pregnancy. I would listen to the affirmation cds every night in bed and drift off into amazing, deep sleep long before the cd’s could finish. I would recommend doing the HypnoBirthing course to anybody who is pregnant, regardless of the type of birth they want to have. The information in the book and relaxation techniques are invaluable.
I have just found out I am pregnant with our 3rd baby. This will be a VBAC in an intervention happy hospital. I am very much looking forward to learning new tools to help me birth this babe naturally.
I would love this amazing pack to help me birth my next baby peacefully. I didn’t know about hypnobirthing with my first which was a labour I felt powerless in. With hypnobirthing I believe I will be able to be one with my body. Thank you <3
I’m currently 20 weeks pregnant with my second child. My first labour was extremely difficult and long, and as the time draws closer, I’m freaking out more and more about what will happen this time around. I live in a country town which compounds my fears of something going wrong.
awesome 🙂 would love to give hypnobirthing a go for #2! (21 wks preggo now). was lucky to have a natural pain free, 4hr labour with #1 ….positive thoughts means positive outcome 🙂
I have decided I HAVE to have a hypnobirth – I just don’t know how I will do it otherwise :/ I’m 22 weeks with our gorgeous little guy who is already so treasured. After 4 years trying to conceive we are in awe of the little miracle growing in my tummy and therefor want to look at look at labour as being beautiful and amazing, rather than horrible and painful. I think hypnobirthing will help me do that! 🙂
I have just finished reading HypnoBirthing by Marie Mongan as my husband and I have chosen to go through a birthing centre as we are hoping to have a calm and positive birthing experience with our first child. Having herniated two discs in my back in this later stage of pregnancy has started to make me nervous about been able to achieve what we hope to with labor as daily tasks have become difficult. I would love the opportunity to learn from Tracey and ensure that my child is born into this world in a calm and positive manner. It has been amazing learning more about my body through this pregnancy and having the chance to feel empowered by labor is what my husband and I are looking for.
I would love to learn more about hypnobirthing, I am currently pregnant with my fourth and would love to finish my birthing experiences with a labour that I felt in control of, a labour that I could actually look forward to, not be frightened of!
A little boy is on it’s way and it would be great to read this book before the final day. 🙂
I would like to not have to rely on the gas for my next delivery, whenever that may be! So any help would be appreciated!
I am 21 weeks pregnant and would love to set some fear free.
I would love to win this – being a prenatal yoga teacher this would be a fabulous resource for my clients 🙂
