I know. I know.
I’m really on a ‘plastic is evil’ rant this week.
But …. have a read of Slow Death by Rubber Duck and then tell me I’m crazy.
Plastic toys are quite often very toxic – especially the cheaper ones and kids do love to chew on them!
I know that shopping for plastic free toys and gifts for kids takes more of an effort than just popping down to your local KMart. I know that eco-friendly, non-toxic good quality toys made by small, ethical businesses cost more.
But I also know that our kids are worth it and so is our planet.
Here are some of the most fabulous plastic free gifts for kids in Australia right now!
For Babies:
For Toddlers:
For Kids:
Green Start Giant Floor Puzzles
For Teens:
Where to shop:
These are some great online stores to check out that have plastic-free gifts and toys!
It’s quite frightening, the extent to which are all exposed to toxins isn’t it?
My girls are nuts about dolls and are always wanting more. Ater lots of discussion and their own research, we have decided as a family to make presents more about shared experiences and outings and less about accumulating toys that are not good for our wellbeing, or that of our planets.
Thanks for the reminders and for providing such great solutions Sonia x
That is a great idea! There comes a time when there is just soooo much stuff! Birthday parties are the worst – 20 kids means 20 more things!
You can kind of understand it tho, the move from toxic painted wooden toys to ‘safe’ (ha!) plastics! We try and make some toys, like Miss nearly 2 is getting a refurbished tv cabinet made into a dress up cupboard/dolls house for her birthday… if it get it finished in time!
I know! All that lead! I would love to see piccies – you could write me a guest blog Lorraine on how to do it!! xxx
Arrrrrgh the plastic war – it’s ever on-going however hard I try to fight it!! Luckily Misty loves painting and crafting so we tend to recycle a lot of our household rubbish into crafting stuff and we make a lot of play-dough!!
When we do get toys they are usually from the op shop…. so I feel a little better than buying NEW plastic ya know?
I echo Kirri’s idea too – experiences are so much more VALUE than more STUFF…. so we go on camping adventures!
You are an amazing Mumma – you have it all sorted! 🙂
I am a co-ordinator at a toy library. We encourage parents to borrow toys to reduce the impact on the environment from toys ending up in landfill. We also focus on buying environmentally friendly toys. When your children outgrow toys your local toy library would love to accept donations of toys in good condition as toy libraries rely on fundraising and grants to buy new toys. You can find your local toy library at http://www.toylibraries.org.au/
Great idea! We used to love the toy library for those big toys and for parties!
