How To Make An Easy Upcyled Easter Crown

March 29, 2021 · Leave a Comment

By Jasmine at Crafty Little Folk

Who can believe it’s already time for Easter Parades!!

Teachers & families all over the country will be busily sloshing glue about, adding sweet pastel coloured shapes to create fun headdresses & bunny ears.   If you haven’t had time to whip some up with your children yet, don’t panic, I’ve got a fun, quick way to create an Easter masterpiece.

I am going to show you how to make an easy upcyled Easter Crown!

How to make a recycled Easter crown bonnet

Yesterday I had the pleasure of running a couple of children’s Easter craft workshops at our local handmade Bush to Bay Market.  In preparation I headed to our local library for crafty inspiration & nuggets of gold.  I certainly found it in Alyn Carlson’s The Paper Hat Book.

What a gorgeous book full of beautiful crowns!!  But what I found super helpful,  was how she reused brown paper grocery bags as her crown base! Genius! Perfect thick sturdy paper that will withstand plenty of glue & goodies!  Plus we all have a couple of those stashed with our shopping bags.

So now lets go raid your craft box!!!

Making a recycled Easter Crown Easter Craft

Materials (makes 4)

2x brown paper grocery bags

1x ruler

1x paper scissors

1x stapler

!x craft glue , either PVA or a big glue stick

Craft supplies feathers

Easter stickers

Confetti

Paper offcuts

Wool & felt pieces

Washi tape

Glitter or anything else in your craft stash

Method

10 – 15 minutes prep   15-30 minutes craft

  1. Cut the base and handles out of your paper grocery bag.   The cut down the side of the bag to create a large rectangle.
  2. Using a ruler measure 10cm along the width of the bag & cut two long strips 10cm wide x 40cm long (approx depending on the size of your bag)
  3. Fold your strips in half to create a fold line 5cm wide.
  4. If your child would like to make bunny ears, then cut 2 curved ear shapes from the paper offcuts.
  5. Open your folded head band.  Cover the inside with glue & let your child add their bunny ears or feathers up to the fold line.  You could also add strips of coloured paper, felt or pipe cleaners.
  6. Add glue on the other side & fold the paper closed, encasing the bunny ears or feathers. Press down along the length of the band to ensure the head band is closed.
  7. Wrap the band around your child head & trim with 4cm overlap (to be stapled soon!)
  8. Lay the paper flat on the table & let the children decorate with all your wonderful craft supplies.  If time allows, try not to rush or help your child here.  Allow them the freedom to add & subtract, problem solve, think creatively & of course ask you for assistance if needed.  They may want to use felt pens to create extra texture & colour.
  9.  Once your child has finished creating an Easter crown masterpiece, top it off with glue & glitter or eco glitter for that extra bling!
  10. Wrap the crown around your child’s head, resting on an angle on their ears & staple the crown together at the back a couple of times.
  11. If you have a mirror handy, show the children just how fabulous their creation is!  Put it up on top of the fridge ready for your Easter Parade!

A Recycled Easter Crown Bonnet Easter Craft

Tah DaH!  Easter Parade ready!

Now if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at hello@craftylittlefolk.com.

Also if you’re a sewer you may like these sweet bunny ear headbands or perhaps your children love gardening, these Easter grass eggs are so fun to make. A batch of Chocolate Playdough would be so fun as well.

Happy crafting & I hope you have a lovely relaxing Easter!

About Jasmine:

I’m Jasmine & I love to create fun, engaging activities to share with those busy little people in your life.

Are you an Early Childhood Educator (like me!) or a parent or grandparent looking for a range of easy, yet charming experiences to create together? Fresh, free printables are added often, so you can print & go, having more time with your little folk.

A smidge about me…..

I live in Queensland Australia, on overgrown farm with my husband, two teenage daughters & a couple of sweet, but needy puppies.

For many years we ran our own produce business from the farm.  Our girls grew up around farmers, soil, lots of flowers & the occasional rotten potato.

I was a hands-on mum & soon learnt that our children loved playing with a pile of cardboard boxes, just as much as that new Bratz doll (if not more).

When our youngest started high school I was able to return to study Early Childhood Education.  These days I work in a lovely childcare centre with a top team of hard working, (sometime mischievous) ladies who make me laugh everyday.

Caring for young children is a big, fun messy job. Sharing in their growth, watching their personalities develop & building meaningful relationships is such a joy & privilege.

Creating safe, stimulating environments is also a big job.  Here at Crafty Little Folk, I hope to share the experiences our children love exploring & inspire you to get messy !

A healthy Easter basket for kids

March 8, 2018 · 1 Comment

A healthy Easter basket for kids

Easter is here yet again and I thought I would share with you some healthy, ethical and natural ideas for the kids’ Easter baskets.

I know Easter can be one of those occasions that can easily become excessive and overly commercialised. Dealing with family members and outside influences that don’t support your healthy choices can be very stressful. Check out my hints on how to navigate this with humour and grace.

What family traditions do you have for Easter? What are you putting into baskets? Let us know in the comments.

♥ The Basket

Finding a gorgeous basket you can re-use year after year is a great eco-friendly option. You can also have a hunt around the house for some boxes, bags, tins or baskets you could upcyle, decorate and use!

♥ Ethical Woven Seagrass

I love this biodegradable, hand-made, woven seagrass basket for a simple reusable option. You can embellish with ribbons or wind some pom poms around the top to get a different look every year. You can also reuse it for storage around the home and pop it in the compost when it’s getting ratty.

Get it here.

♥ Handmade, personalised baskets

Head over to Etsy to see a huge range of handmade Easter baskets. Many can be personalised making them a gorgeous gift. Check it out here.

♥ Chocolate

I am a huge advocate for fair-trade and ethical chocolate. If you are not buying something you know is fair-trade, then chances are child slavery is involved in the cacao production. You can get a good range and always be assured that the chocolate is fair-trade and ethical here.

♥  Boobook Chocolate Eggs

These Boobook eggs are caramel filled and chocolate coated. Organic, gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan, they are new to Loving Earth. A whopping half of the profits will go to The Great Forest National Park campaign. Get them here on sale!

♥ Moo-Free Rosie Rabbit

Rosie is a vegan, organic, dairy free, gluten free, soy free choccy rabbit. Moo Free also do larger chocolate Easter Eggs as well. Find them here.

♥ Gingerbread Rabbits

I am a long time lover of these gingerbreads. Hand-made in the Blue Mountains, Karen and Dom lovingly create great quality food in compostable packing. These bunnies are gluten-free, nut-free, egg-free, palm-oil free, vegan and contain no artificial weird stuff. They also come in chocolate.

Find them here.

♥ Oscar the Orangutan

These cute little Oscar bars are organic, gluten free, dairy free, palm oil free, refined sugar free, vegan and ethically made. Five cents from every bar goes to The Orangutan Project, to help conserve orangutans and their habitat. They also come in white chocolate flavour. Find them here.

♥ Easter toys and gifts

♥ Easter Bilby Book

Any excuse for a new book is a good idea in my book! This Easter Bilby book from Aussies Nette Hilton and Bruce Whatley. is so charming and will make a lovely family tradition. Get it here in hard back or soft cover.♥ Jack ‘n Jill Bunny Toothbrush

Look I am just being practical here! 😀 Good teeth brushing is important after the Easter chocolates, so make it fun with this cute bunny tooth brush from Jack ‘n Jill. It’s also completely bio-degradable and toxin-free. Find it here.

♥ Peter Rabbit money box

We have some of these gorgeous Wedgwood Peter Rabbit pieces. They make a lovely heirloom gift and they also come in bowls and cups too. Check them out here.

You could also add some small things to the Easter baskets like crayons, colouring books, crystals and small wooden toys.

Cool Ideas for Easter (that aren’t chocolate)

Cool Ideas for Easter (that aren’t chocolate)

This ancient pagan celebration has somehow turned into a commercialised chocolate-fest!

The pressure is on parents to make Easter another Christmas but with copious amounts of cheap, nasty chocolate. It’s easy for kids to get caught up the hype.

Okay, so how do you participate in Easter, enjoy some chocolate and not be a party-pooper?

My tips are to go back to basics.

Create family traditions based around making Easter treats together (homemade hot cross buns and Easter eggs are really not too hard to do!) You can put a limit on treats or let the grandparents supply the chocolate while you get the kids something else for their Easter basket.

When it comes to chocolate, buy smaller amounts of good quality, fair-trade chocolate and really savour it.

Here are some more ideas and alternatives for you.

♥ Bamboo Easter Signs

These bamboo signs are hand made in Melbourne and start at just $15.00  You can get a generic one or get it personalised with your kids’ or family name! Check it out here.

♥ Recycled Sari Easter Basket

At just $9.95, this gorgeous Easter basket is made from recycled saris and ethically made in Bangladesh. I want one of these for myself. Just adorable! Get it here.

♥ Terracotta Bunny Lantern

Perfect for the person in your life who doesn’t want chocolate for Easter but you still don’t want them feeling left out. It makes a gorgeous decoration for the house at Easter as well. Get it online here.

♥ Organic Crochet Bunny

Beautifully hand-made in Australia using organic cotton, you can get one of these adorable bunnies here.

♥ Wooden Counting Rabbits

This set of eco-friendly counting rabbits with carrots can be used as a puzzle or free play. Totally safe for kids with non-toxic paints and plantation timber.

Get it online here.

♥ BBYO Bunni Water Bottle

For those too old (or cool) for toys, this Bunni water bottle is super cute. The bottle has no plastic at all and is heat resistant so you can use if for water or hot drinks! Get it here.

♥ Oxfam Unwrapped

Gift some chickens or a goat or a myriad of other life saving things to those in need. Check out Oxfam Unwrapped here.

♥ Gingerbread Bunnies!

I am such a fan of Gingerbread Folk’s products. They are handmade in the Blue Mountains and contain no artificial nasties. The bunnies are wrapped individually in compostable packaging and perfect for baskets or for hunting! Get them online here.

♥ Healthy Marshmallows

The very clever Jo Whitton from Quirky Cooking has just come out with this yummy, all natural, honey-sweetened marshmallow recipe just in time for Easter. It’s so easy to make and relatively inexpensive too. Try out some different flavourings and have fun! Get the recipe here.

♥ Naturally Dyed Easter Eggs

A really fun project to do with the kids is dyed eggs. Using natural ingredients like turmeric and beetroot, Mommypotamus shows you step by step how to do it. Read more here.

♥ Cute Eco Easter Bags!

Super easy, eco-friendly and really, really cute. A great way to share your homemade treats. Find the tutorial here.

Your complete guide to a healthy Easter

Easter is early this year!

One thing I have noticed you all chatting about is how overwhelming all the chocolate is at Easter time. Well-meaning friends and family love to spoil our kids and it can all get a little crazy. It’s worthwhile establishing some boundaries around this if you feel uncomfortable. One of our gorgeous mums made a cute graphic saying ‘thank you but no gifts for Easter’ and shared it amongst her family and friends. Great idea!

There is also a huge amount of horrible chocolate out there – full of nasty additives, palm oil and fillers and produced in an unethical way. My thoughts are always quality over quantity! Get some really good, quality chocolate and just have a little amount. The same goes for hot cross buns – make them yourself with high quality ingredients and you will be less inclined to eat dozens of yucky supermarket ones.

Here are my top picks for Easter this year…..

healthyeasterchocs

♥ Healthier Chocolate

If you are after healthier or allergy friendly Easter Eggs and chocolate, check out the range at Biome.

I always recommend you look out for chocolate that is fair trade and free of palm oil. Unfortunately, chocolate production comes with issues such as deforestation, environmental pollution, child slave labour and unethical payment of workers. It pays to know where your chocolate is coming from and how it is produced.

Cute Ideas for Easter Baskets

♥ Cute Ideas for Easter Baskets

♥ I love the chocolate gingerbread bunny biscuits from Gingerbread Folk. They are individually wrapped so perfect for the Easter Egg Hunt too.

♥ Add in a cute bunny toothbrush to help get rid of all that sugar off the teeth! Find them here.

♥ I always used to include a book at Easter time when my kids were small! Check out the beautiful selection of Easter themed books here.

Homemade Easter Treats

Homemade Chocolate, Buns and Bums.

♥ Special Easter Baking Pack. Cyndi at Changing Habits has put together an Easter baking pack filled with organic, whole foods that you can use to create your own healthy Easter Treats. She has also thrown in some freebies!! Woohoo. Check it out here.

♥ The BEST healthy hot cross bun recipes to suit any diet can be found here.

♥ Dairy Free Chocolate Cream Easter Eggs from Lisa at Happy Tummies.

♥ Paleo Creme Eggs from Hold the Grain.

♥ Bunny Butt Pancakes from Edible Life in YYC. Use a healthy pancake recipe like one of these.

♥ Sugar Free Easter Chocolates from Becomingness.

Healthy Easter Ideas

It’s that time of year again! I have a round up of some of my favourite ideas and blog posts to keep you healthy and happy this Easter.

♥ Chocolates

moo-free-organic-dairy-free-easter-egg-100g-bunnycomb♥ Moo Free Easter Eggs. This range is so popular at Easter time! As well as being dairy free (Moo Free, geddit) they are also organic, vegan, gluten free, non gmo, egg free and fair trade. All while tasting like high quality milk chocolate. Be quick – these go fast!

fair-trade-easter-organic-milk-chocolate-egg

♥ Organic Times Easter Egg. Made from organic swiss chocolate and sweetened with rapadura, this chocolately egg is also fair trade and palm oil free. I also love the other chocolate range that Organic Times does which includes chocolate coated almonds, licorice, ginger and more. Find that range here.

chocolate-easter-bunny-biscuit-all-natural

♥ Chocolate Gingerbread Bunny Biscuit. So cute and a great little addition to the Easter basket. They come individually wrapped in compostable packaging and are handmade in the Blue Mountains. Free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives, eggs and GMO-free, there is also a gluten free option.

alter-eco-organic-truffles-velvet-108g

♥ Alter Eco Velvet Truffles. Confession time – I buy these for myself and hide them from the kids. The are soooooo delicious! You can also feel virtuous eating them because they are organically grown, fair trade, GMO-free, gluten free and have compostable wrappers. The smooth balls of Peruvian chocolate with a melty, silky centre oozing with pure coconut oil and milk chocolate will make this a perfect gift for anyone. HOT TIP: Get a pack for yourself, you won’t be sorry!

crio1♥ Crio Bru. This is the chocolate you have when you are not having a chocolate. Just 100% pure roasted cacao beans, Crio Bru the most healthy hot chocolate ever! Brew it in a plunger, thermomix, coffee machine or on the stove for a rich, chocolately hit without sugar and all the nasties. The Vega Real is my favourite blend, but there are heaps to try and they are all different.

♥ Gifts

I know many of you like to keep the chocolate to a minimum and pop a few non-food gifts into the Easter baskets. Here are some perfect ideas.

australian-barefoot-bilby

♥ Bilbys! These are made from 100% natural fibres and non-toxic dyes. They are hand woven by fair-trade artisans in Sri Lanka.

18576208♥  Interactive sticker card from Oxfam Unwrapped will educated kids about how chickens help developing countries.

 Healthy Homemade Easter Eggs

Why would you make your own Easter Eggs?

Well, I can think of several good reasons!

♥ Making your own treats means you know exactly what is in it

♥ Most ‘commercial’ Easter eggs are very high in refined sugar, contain a lot of nasty additives and hydrogenated vegetable oils and also palm oil (which while is okay for our health is not so good for our orangutans)

♥ Homemade stuff always tastes better (yep, it’s the love)

♥ It’s part of the slow food movement – slow down, enjoy making and eating food so it becomes mindful

♥ Homemade takes time and effort – you are less likely to over-indulge in treats if it’s harder to access

Of course, we don’t always have time, so there are other good options out there you can source – organic, fair trade and allergy friendly.

If you do have time, here are some awesome recipes you might like to take a crack at.

Healthy Hot Cross Buns

Healthy hot cross buns

Such a thing does exist!

The commercial hot cross buns you buy are laden with additives, hydrogenated vegetable oils and lots of sugar. Read your labels and check them out. Better still, make your own!

Sure, these take a bit more time and effort, but I think it’s great. Get back to slow cooking and make it a family tradition. Plus, you won’t eat as many if you have to make them!

Check out these amazing recipes from very clever food bloggers. Serve them with lashing of organic butter!

Enjoy!

Healthy Homemade Chocolate Bars

Do you have a favourite chocolate bar?

I know one blogger who has a thing for Cherry Ripe! Mine would have to be a Caramello Koala, but I haven’t had one in quite some time.

Although I think it’s totally fine to have these occasionally, how much more awesome is it when you could make your favourite chocolate bar at home, without the artificial stuff, using real whole foods.

Yes, I know they take time to make and are a little fiddly, but hey, this is a good thing because you won’t make them everyday!

I have eight healthy, whole food recipes for popular chocolate bars, just for you.

Where recipes call for agave syrup, I personally would replace it with honey, maple syrup or rice syrup.

Your guide to a Happy, Healthy Easter !

Your guide to a Happy, Healthy Easter !

It’s an early Easter this year! Are you ready?

This pagan celebration has somehow turned into a giant choc-fest! I also think it’s outrageous that hot cross buns appear on Boxing Day. More and more catalogues and shops are suggesting that Easter is another Christmas and we should buy gifts as well as copious amounts of chemical-laden chocolate.

It is easy for kids to get caught up the hype.

Okay, so how do you participate in Easter, enjoy some chocolate and not be a party-pooper? Well, it’s easy. Just go back to basics – home made is best or choose your products wisely. Create family traditions based around making treats together on the Easter weekend. We ask family and friends to not buy chocolate for our kids. We all just get one small portion of chocolate each. That is really enough and we all enjoy it!

Here are some more healthy ideas and alternatives for you.
