Tonemade – dehydrated bone broth powder that tastes amazing!
What do you get when a chef who has Hashimotos makes bone broth for his healing? A very tasty bone broth that’s what!
I was so excited to try this new bone broth powder and it does not disappoint. Tonemade is lovingly cooked, dehydrated and packaged on the South Gippsland coast by Tony and Felicity, a gorgeous couple who are passionate about real food and wellbeing.
Tonemade (get it – Tony made it – don’t worry it took an embarrassingly long time for that to dawn on me) was launched last year to great success.
What’s the go with bone broth?
You may remember an article I wrote a while back, A Beginner’s Guide to Bone Broth (and if you don’t, go read it!) Bone broth is not some new fad, it’s an ancient healing food that is prevalent in many cultures. Lately there has been a resurgence in popularity of traditional healing foods, like broth and ferments. Bone broth is a very nourishing and healing, food-based way to improve your health and a wide range of ailments.
Now I haven’t talked about it a great deal but I have had a challenging year with my health and have had to do some really hard core gut repair. Bone broth plays a really big part in that and I have to consume it daily. It’s making a huge difference to my gut health and I am feeling better than I have in a long time. I am a total convert.
Yes, you sure can make your own bone broth. It’s relatively easy but it does take some time and effort and you have to source really good organic bones and ingredients.
In our modern times, we often don’t have that spare time or energy to cook everything from scratch so it’s great to be able to have broth available in a quick and easy form. At my most unwell stage, I wasn’t even able to get out of bed, so cooking was totally out of the question!
Dehydrated broth is also good for those people that can’t stand the smell of the broth cooking in their house. It can get a bit whiffy and strong smelling especially since you cook it up to two days. Funny story – one night I was berating hubby for stinking up our bedroom with his wind, only to realise later it was my broth cooking. I don’t think I will ever live that one down !! 😉
Dehydrated broth is brilliant for travelling because it’s so easy to take the jar with you and make it up fresh with hot water as you need it. You can even take it on a plane and get the hosties to give you some hot water.
I also like to add a spoonful of broth powder to my cooking – basically any dish that calls for stock powder can be substituted with dehydrated bone broth powder. Unlike the nasties in stock powder (hello MSG I am looking at you), bone broth is actually good for you and will boost the nutrient density in your meals. It adds a really great depth of flavour too. Try it in your spaghetti bolognaise!
Buying organic dehydrated broth is a little more expensive than making it yourself and if you compare it to stock powder or cubes, it is pricey. However, I don’t compare it to stock powder (yuck) I compare it to supplements and vitamins because really – it is a healing product. Looking at it this way, the price is actually very reasonable in comparison to some of the stuff I take.
I’m calling it!
Tonemade is the most delicious dehydrated broth powder I have tried – by far.
It smells like roast beef and tastes like a rich beef soup. The broth granules are quite small and every last bit dissolves in your cup, so there are no weird chewy bits left on the bottom.
I usually prefer chicken broth over beef broth, but I really love the taste of the Tonemade beef and can happily drink it instead of my regular. It actually makes a nice change!
Tony has a chicken broth powder in the pipeline which I am really keen to try as well.
What’s in it?
Being a chef, Tony is fussy about the quality of his produce. Tonemade use local certified organic meat and marrow bones, organic vegetables and organic spices and vinegar. You can find out more about the provenance of the ingredients here. There are no nasties, no weird fillers or artificial ingredients – just real food.
To dehydrate the broth, it is dried using a low temperature for 18 hours to retain the integrity of the nutrients. This is so important as there is not much point having broth without the full spectrum of goodness. You can read more about the nutrient profile of the broth here.
Meet Tony and Felicity
I know I have said it before, but I really do only work with people I get a good vibe about and these two have good vibes in abundance!
Both Tony and Felicity have used bone broth to facilitate their own healing journeys, so they really walk the talk. They have an incredible passion for real food, health and wellbeing. I also love their commitment to using locally sourced quality food to make the broth.
I think the secret to their delicious tasting broth is most definitely Tony’s background as a chef and his time spent as a saucier in Madrid and of course all the love they add in too.
They are a gorgeous family following their dreams and helping other people access the healing power of broth. So much to respect about that.
