What are the best packet snacks for kids?

What are the best packet snacks for kids?

I get asked this question a lot!

Now, I am no expert, but what I have done is find some packaged snacks at the supermarket that I would feel okay about feeding my kids occasionally.

They aren’t all necessarily super-nutritious, but I think they are superior to the majority of packaged snacks out there.

We all know that fresh and homemade snacks are best for kids. If you are in the supermarket, grab a piece of fruit, a punnet of cherry tomatoes, some baby qukes, some plain organic nuts or organic dried fruit without additives. This is your best bet.

The problem with any pre-packaged snacks is that they are processed. The processing can strip food of nutrients and change the way your body uses it as fuel. Processed foods, in my opinion, should be considered as sometimes foods.

I have included the ingredients list for each product and the link to the website so you can determine for yourself if the snack is suitable for your family’s dietary needs.

A couple of things you should be aware of :

*if you choose corn or soy products that are not organic and don’t specifically say no GMO’s, then you run the risk of that product containing GMOs. Check out the True-Food Network for more info.

*there is some controversy about sunflower oil and inulin.

*if a product says vegetable oil, chances are it’s canola – we don’t eat canola oil.

I am not here to judge anyone about what they eat! Everyone is on their own health journey – this just happens to be where we are right now. Hopefully, armed with a bit more information, you can make your own choices about what you feed your cherubs.

Berry Choc Chunk drink sounds good!
I must say I am very conscious about the amount of sugar that my kids have in their food. Quite surprisingly a lot of the bars, yogurts and juices made for kids are jam packed with sugar which is a huge worry. I really like the idea of the berry choc chunk bars they sound fabulous!

Yum! The Berry Choc Chunk (powdered drink) looks yummo, I think I’d replace my Milo with it! (one of a few ‘naughties’ we have).
We are recent converts to Coconut Sugar, and I really love that this powder is a relatively low GI drink that’s packed with good nutrients! My son might even be fighting me for it!

Really like your list of “ok’d” packet foods. Our list looks very similar.
Just wanted to note that we pop our own corn and it’s an absolute favourite 🙂
I wasn’t aware of the GM factor if it’s not organic though, so might take a look at your links. Thanks 🙂

Yes, that was my thought about so many of the snacks in this post too – many are packed full of sugar. And it may be ‘natural’ / no added sugar, but fructose is fructose is fructose unfortunately…

I have a terrible time getting my girls to take vitamins, but I can imagine this would be easy to hide in a sauce or a muffin. Any alkaline greens I’ve tried before have tasted awful and been in a course powder form (so they do not blend into food well or easily), hence I have been unable to incorporate them into my 2 little girls’ meals. I would love to try the VITAL VEGGIE POWER on my little one. She’s 3 and thinks she can make up her own mind on what to eat and what not to eat. I ask her to try her veggies and she tells me in a stern, angry voice ‘no mummy, I told you.’

I have ordered all three of the powders to try with the kids. My son loves smoothies for breakfast and “chocolate” milk and I cant wait to sprinkle some on my daughters yogurt.

I would love to try the vegie power, the only catch is finding one that doesn’t have tomatoes, berries or citrus in it as one of our daughters can’t have any of those ingredients 🙂

Difficult to choose between Berry Choc Chunk & C Berry Blast. I think my kids would love them mixed with milk or yoghurt.

I have ‘liked’ the Superfood for Kids FB page for a while but I’m yet to try out any products. I’d love to try the vital veggie powder for my toddler but mostly for my veggie-avoiding husband!

I would like to (and will) try the Vital Veggie Powder. My 3 yr old son used to eat everything I gave him but has been so picky for a while now & hardly eats any fruit and veges. I just keep offering them and have faith that he will come back to them but it would make me feel better to know that he is getting something good into him in the meantime.

When I play golf I take a Carman bar along with a couple of apples. I eat it at about hole 12 when I need a bit of a pick me up. I love them.

We don’t take packaged food to school but have it available for sometimes food. Thanks for the heads up and making it a bit easy to find some better choices. Will be checking out the popcorn.

Berry Choc chunk bars would definetly be a hit here. So many healthy ingredients included in the recipe. I always feel guilty when I buy bar type products from the supermarket for my 2 girls. 1 is just starting to feed herself, and isn’t liking the texture of non cooked fruits and vegetables at the moment. It makes taking out snacks a hassle, as packaged bars are a very convenient go to for us at the moment. Particularly when we’re out and about in places where I’m not able to use a high chair!

I spent $150 on all three powders and have to say the kids have a problem with all of them. The veggie powder changes foods colour which they didn’t like and also changes it’s taste and won’t dissolve in water.

The berry choc chunk won’t dissolve and they don’t like the chunky bits!!

The berry blast I’ve used once and it doesn’t dissolve in drinks either. My kids don’t like the floaties!!! Soo picky! The veggie powder is ok ( they haven’t discovered it) in spag bog which is good. Is there an ideas page on how to use these products snd have them hidden for my seriously picky eaters!!

HI Holly! The powders won’t dissolve in water but they can be added to any foods. So you can bake with them as well. My kids don’t notice when I mix Vital Vege into meals. Maybe use less and work up as they get used to the taste. Use the berry choc chunk and the berry blast in smoothies – just a teaspoon. There are loads of ideas on the Superfoods for Kidz facebook page and website for ideas on how to use. 🙂

The Munchkin regularly enjoys Whole Kids fruit bars – a quick addition to the lunchbox on creative days! He also has organic popcorn and corn chips, although I tend to buy the bigger packets and pop a serve into his snack container, rather than buying the smaller packs.

Some Great snack ideas!! I will be checking out a few of these in the shops thats for sure!!

I love the Five:AM Vanilla Bean yoghurt drink for mysself 🙂

Can you tell me if the ‘Superfoods for kids’ one is a smooth bar texture?? Or are any others smooth textured??

My fussy child who wont eat quite a lot of snack foods (but will DEMOLISH a bowl of mummies home made pumpkin soup – with 300 hidden veg LOL), will only eat ‘snack’ food bars that seem to have a chocolate content, and wont eat anything with visible nuts.

The other bad thing is that we cant give them anything containing nuts for school!

As for other snack foods – I know they’re not exactly packaged, but I make my own sultanas that Mr Fussy will eat, and dried apple rings that his brother will eat.

Well, even though they cant take the Macro Raw Food Bar to school, because of the nut content, I bought one of each last night, and tried them on the kids – unfortunately, as soon as Connor found that they had nuts in them, he didnt like them (this is the boy who can tell one brand of butter or cheese from another – he has a future as a food taster if he wasnt so fussy!)
His brother also didnt like them unfortunately, so not even a home snack :-(((

Ah well – maybe I can find something LOL

    Great list ta!

I would add Vita Wheat 100% natural rice crackers.

Even though the brand suggests it these don’t contain wheat!

Thanks a lot for this info. I thought I was feeding my kids very healthy, until someone pointed out the amount of sugar certain snacks have.
Out of curiosity, why don’t you eat canola oil? What is bad about it?
    Thanks in advance
